Describe how employee engagement can impact the changing business environment.
For an organization to be nimble enough to adapt to the changing business environment, it needs an agile workforce. Agility is strategic, behavioral, and operational factors that blend to create teams that use knowledge and information as quickly as possible to produce customer value (Holbeche, 2019). Creating an agile workforce relies heavily on having an engaged workforce that is motivated and keyed into the organization’s business strategy, which includes its mission, vision, values, and goals. To help their employees become more agile and engaged, leaders and HR management can encourage employees to be aware of current happenings within the organization and of external factors impacting the organization, to voice their ideas and solutions, to empower employees with knowledge and education, and to encourage every employee to take responsibility and interest in the organization as if he or she were the owner committed to its success (Holbeche, 2019).
Explain how employees can lead change.
HR managers and organizational leadership cannot implement change without the support of the employees. Engaged employees who are encouraged to share their ideas and are empowered to act on them can help their organizations navigate internal and external changes (Holbeche, 2019). For instance, employees know the ins and outs of their departments and what changes can be made that will still allow them to be efficient in their roles, so they can lead change by offering effective cost savings solutions when an organization needs to reduce spending. Listening to employee feedback and acting on their ideas further engages employees. Engaged employees can also act as champions for change initiatives by spreading the word about the initiative, what it will look like, how it will impact employees, and what the benefits are (Altındağ, 2016). With greater employee buy-in and interest, more employees will accept the change with less resistance, which will help to shift the organizational culture and solidify the change.
