“I think about my own experience working where a new EHR has recently been rolled out and there have been lots of IT emergencies. Despite the huge role IT has played, I realize I have no idea what my facility’s IT governance structure is like. I think it exists outside the walls of the facility itself, and this executive approach makes it very difficult for employees to understand its structure. I think the first step when new to an organization in determining governance effectiveness and functionality is to consider how you would route a request or project idea. Next, I would think about outlining the structure itself – do I know who to present ideas to and who is responsible for approving or declining them? Do I know what resources are available to me as an end user? If the answer to these questions is “no,” I think it is unlikely the governance structure is functional or effective.
Sneaker (2017) makes powerful and simple points about engagement in IT governance – you don’t have to be in an IT or executive role to make a difference. The best place to start may be simply making a plan for governance if one doesn’t already exist and presenting it to leadership. This simple step can help streamline IT requests and preserve valuable time while ensuring projects are not conflicting with one another and prioritization is appropriate.”
