Chapter 6: Aging and Ageism
The last slide of this week’s PowerPoint lecture leads to a story, to help us better understand why aging has been considered a social problem. I’m going to tell you a story, which happened recently. A colleague of mine brought his 82-year-old mother to live with him after she had fallen in her own home. He was divorced, an only child, so it made sense that she would live with him. He did not have a lot of financial resources to provide a caregiver in the home, but he did his best.
Eventually, she started to lose her balance and fall more frequently, and on more than one occasion he would come home from work to find her lying on the floor, in a great deal of pain. He started to feel burdened by her failing health and her medical needs and did not know where to turn.
We were talking one day, and he confided in me that he was starting to break under the stress. I offered that many people look to assisted living facilities for their elderly parents. “No way,” he said – “we are Cuban, and Cubans do not do that to their parents.” I did mention that a Cuban colleague of ours whose mother used to live in the casita, experienced a similar decline in health, and he had found a place where there were other Cuban elders. Our colleague’s mother hated the place at first but eventually, she made friends and grew to like it.
After much soul-searching and research, our mutual colleague finally decided that assisted living was the best option. He had a conversation with his mother and it did not go well. After more conversation, he took her to see the facility and after many tears, she agreed to go.
On December 4th, his mother moved into the facility.
On December 5th, she died.
There are at least three ways that his mother’s death can be understood. What I’d like you to do in your discussions is come up with at least three ways to understand this, in the context of what we are covering this week and in this course.
