Here is what to focus on in each paragraph:

Write: Essay 1 prewriting (due before class) using quotes and active/”signal” verbs (Stanton and Jefferson)

Two paragraphs: The Declarations in Conversation
In Essay 1, you will be considering the following question: How does Stanton revise, challenge, or critique Jefferson — and for what purpose/s?
In this short two-paragraph assignment, you will start to think about how to answer that question. Here are the steps:
Pick a block quote from Jefferson and a block quote from Stanton that you want to put in conversation.
Write one paragraph using the quote from Jefferson, following the paragraph structure in the Google doc, English 120: Close Reading/Writing Materials (Claim > Evidence (Quote) > Analysis).
Write one paragraph using the quote from Stanton, following the paragraph structure in the Google doc, English 120: Close Reading/Writing Materials (Claim > Evidence (Quote) > Analysis). Here is what to focus on in each paragraph:
Introducing the quote using active/”signal” verbs (see handouts above and templates/verbs from They Say / I Say).
Analyzing the quote, parsing (breaking down) the language, using the strategies in English 120: Close Reading/Writing Materials and “Backpacks vs. Briefcases: Steps toward Rhetorical Analysis.” Try to pull out some specific words from the quote in your analysis.
