Homework #2 Guidelines
There are three distinct parts to this homework assignment. Please read and follow directions carefully.
PART 1: Creating your own research question and hypothesis for your final paper
Create YOUR research question and hypothesis for your final research paper. We practiced creating research questions and hypotheses in homework #1, so you should have a pretty good idea of the structure. Now is the time for you to use what you learned to create a research question and hypothesis that YOU will use for your final research paper in this class.
I will provide you feedback on this research question and hypothesis when I grade your homework. You will need me to “approve” what you have created before moving forward, and that may require us talking over e-mail, phone, or zoom, until you eventually have a solid research question and hypothesis to work with. Be patient, as this may take some time and work.
PART 2: Creating your preliminary outline for your final research paper
Create a preliminary outline, based on your hypothesis. It should show me that you have given your research question and hypothesis some thought, and it should conform to the outline basics I provided for you in the Week 4 lecture notes.
The outline should follow this basic format:
Main topic
Sub topic #1
Sub topic #2
Main topic #2
Sub topic #1
Sub topic #2
Main topic #3

Sub topic #2
PART 3: Fixing writing mechanics errors
In each of the following five (5) sentences, there is AT LEAST one writing mechanics error, all of which are represented on the list below. For each sentence, you need to do two things. (1) Tell me in your own words what the writing mechanic error is, and (2) Re-write the sentence correctly without the writing mechanics error. There may be more than one writing error in each.
Possible writing mechanics errors: (NOTE YOU MAY NOT NEED TO USE ALL OF THESE, BUT THESE ARE THE ONLY ONES YOU NEED)
passive voice
run-on sentence
sentence fragment
split infinitive,
misuse of punctuation (commas, apostrophes, etc.)
misplaced modifiers
lack of subject/verb agreement
Note: the Write & Wrong power points that I provide, along with lecture notes, should help you determine good and bad grammar. You might also look at websites such as grammarly.com.
THE FIVE SENTENCES FOR WHICH YOU NEED TO IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM AND FIX THE ERRORS ARE:
There are many theories in criminology and they all explain behavior, for example there are theories that explain why people do and do not commit crimes and there are theories about punishment.
Teenager’s often get in trouble for behaviors that would not be criminal if they were adults.
Authority figures like those in the courtroom has the power to control a person’s life.
Since there was a warrant for his arrest.
The statistics were analyzed by the researchers.
