In what, if any, respects does religious faith resemble
Your task in this assignment is to read the
paragraph below, including the quotation, and then
compose an essay that addresses the questions in the
third paragraph.
The famous Danish author Karen von Blixen wrote novels, memoirs (Out of Africa), and stories (“Babette’s Feast”) under the pseudonym Isak Dinesen. In an interview, she remarked that “One of my friends said about me that I think all sorrows can be borne if you put them into a story or tell a story about them, and perhaps this is not entirely untrue” (SOURCE: The New York Times Book Review [November 3, 1957]: 284).
How close in spirit do you think this stance is to
the view of religion that is framed by Clifford Geertz
in his examination of “Religion as a Cultural System”?
In what, if any, respects does religious faith resemble
a story about the world? If so, how? If not, why not?
Does belief in a religion impart to the believer the
same effects as a story? Does it perform the same
functions for a society? Why or why not? (Please be
specific in your assessment.)
Your essay should extend to a length of approxi- mately five pages, with normally-sized fonts and margins. No outside research is required, although you may introduce and cite as many or as few of the required readings for the class as you believe are relevant. Remember, though, that this paper is governed by the principles of the Academic Code of Honor and you are not to collaborate on this assignment with anyone else. Your finished essay should be printed and stapled, and submitted at class time (5:05 p.m.) on Monday, September 26
