Students will be tasked to select a research topic and to define the problem statement. This research topic and problem statement will be used in the research briefs, literature review, methodology, and final paper assignments for this course.
Tasks
Research Topic: Must be at least 3-4 sentences long. A research topic is the broad subject matter of the research.
Problem Statement: includes a statement of the research objectives and the research questions. State the problem and the observations of the problem *See pages 24, 25, and 38-41 for more information.
Research Questions: Specify what you want to learn about the topic. They guide and structure the process of collecting and analyzing information to help you attain the purpose of your study. In other words, research questions are the translation of the problem into a specific need for information.
Assignment three should be approximately 1/2 to 1 page.
Assignment 4
Students are tasked to write 3 Research Briefs relating to the Research Topic and Problem Statement from Assignment 3.
Select three primary, scholarly, peer-reviewed sources for the research briefs. These include final research reports, thesis, dissertations, etc. A summary or secondary article will not suffice, it must be three primary sources. A primary source usually has a methodology section or describes the methodology in the article.
Task:
Write 3 Research Briefs. Each research brief needs to be at least 2 pages long. The total number of pages submitted needs to be at least 6 pages.
Address the following points:
– Title of the research
– purpose of the study
– methodology
– results and data analysis
– Citation of document
***Give your thoughts and opinions, including the strengths and weaknesses that you found. Describe how this article fits in with your research topic and problem statement. Summarizing what is written in the article will not suffice.

Writing the literature review: The literature review provides a theoretical framework for your research topic and problem statement. Ideally, you will use information from your three previous research briefs and additional scholarly, peer-reviewed sources to create a coherent review of the literature for your topic.
Fraenkel and Wallen (2000, p. 97) have the following to say about literature reviews:
Literature reviews differ in format, but typically they consist of the following five parts.
– The introduction briefly describes the nature of the research problem and states the research question. You also explain what led you to investigate the questions and why it is important to investigate.
– The body of the review briefly reports what others have found or thought about the research problem. Related studies are usually discussed together, grouped under subheads (to make the review easier to read). Major studies are described in more detail, while less important work can be referred to in just a line or two. Often this is done by referring to several studies that reported similar results in a single sentence.
– The summary of the review ties together the main threads revealed in the literature reviewed and presents a composite picture of what is known or thought to date. Findings may be tabulated to give readers some idea of how many other researchers have reported identical or similar findings or have similar recommendations.
– Any conclusions the researcher feels are justified based on the state of knowledge revealed in the literature should be included.
What does the literature suggest are appropriate courses of action to take to try to solve the problem?
– A references page with full citation data for all sources mentioned in the review is essential.
There are many formats that can be used to list references, but the format used by the American Psychological (APA) is required in this class. Also use proper in text citations and APA formatting.

Prepare the methodology section for the research topic selected in Assignment 3 and literature reviews in Assignment 4. Procedures for experimental and survey techniques usually differ from those of documentary. In this assignment, you should indicate the type of research methodology employed to complete the prospectus and discuss the following items in this section.
This is your methodology. What you would actually do. This is not a literature review of what someone else has done. You will use sources and cite them, but you are not going to use exactly the same methodology as someone else.
The following indicates what your methodology needs to include; it is NOT an outline for each paragraph sentence by sentence. Use APA formatting.
1. Population (Specimen if not people)
This section of the procedures should include a complete description of the population or specimen to be used in this study. Several typical questions should be answered and then structured into proper sentences and paragraph form:
1) What people or specimen (description)?
2) How located?
3) How selected?
4) How many?
5) How grouped and used?
2. Instruments and/or Apparatus to be Used
This section of the procedures should include a complete description of each instrument and/or apparatus to be used. Several typical questions should be answered and then properly structured in sentence and paragraph form.
1) Description of each instrument and /or apparatus.
2) What data or information will derive?
3) How developed or obtained?
4) Validity? reliability?
5) How used?
3. Statistical Analysis- you aren’t collecting data, but you can describe what you would do with it.
This section should include a complete description of the following three items:
1) A description of each individual or group comparison to be made.
2) An identification of each statistical procedure to be used (including formulas).
3) The critical limits or levels of confidence acceptable on the total study of each individual comparison.
4. Research Plan
This section should include a step by step or sequential plan of attack for the entire study. Each item or step should be listed form the beginning to the end, placed in its proper sequence, and then written in the proper sequence and paragraph form.
5. Time-on-Task Analysis
This section should include a time schedule or time budget to complete the identified research by the proposed deadline (end of semester). The proposal may use a bar chart or CPM diagram or Excel to illustrate these events.
The handout “Method Section” in Unit 4/Supplements/ also describes the characteristics of major parts (e.g. research participants, instruments, materials/apparatus, design, procedure, data analysis, and time schedule).
